When Pandit Sri Arun Viswanath Gurukkal began serving in Austin, he became the city's first Tamil priest. More than ten years later, families from Round Rock to San Marcos call on him for the milestones that matter most — a first home, a child's Upanayanam, a wedding, or a homam for a fresh start.

Austin's Indian community has grown quickly, and many families are setting up their first home far from parents and the family priest back in India. Gurukkal fills that role: he helps choose the muhurtham, sends a clear samagri list, and conducts every ritual in Sanskrit with explanations in Tamil, Telugu or English so children and guests can follow.

With an M.A. in Shaiva Agama from Sri Venkateswara Vedic University, Tirupati, and the title Shiva Agama Rathnam, he brings temple-trained depth to ceremonies held in living rooms, community halls and offices across the city.
